The guidance counsellor is responsible for the delivery of professional services ensuring the optimal psycho-social, educational and vocational development of secondary and adult students.  These services include counselling, evaluation, consultation, provision of information and liaison and referral activities.

Counselling

On the basis of individual or group counselling sessions as well as the results of tests, the counsellor counsels students on their individual orientation whether they be personal; conflict with parents, peers or teachers, educational; selection of a post-secondary program or school, or vocational; aptitude and interest exploration and development of career goals.

Evaluation

The guidance counsellor administers, scores and interprets both individuals and group tests of intelligence, aptitude, achievement, interest and personality in response to the needs of students. The guidance counsellor conducts psycho-educational evaluations of students who are being considered for special class placement or for whom a specific intervention/remedial programme is deemed available.

Consultation

The guidance counsellor consults and is consulted by a variety of individuals who affect students, such as other professionals (counsellors, social workers, psychologists), psychiatrists and physicians, parents, teachers and school board personnel.

The guidance counsellor also assists teachers in the identification of students who are at risk to drop-out of school, suffering abuse, severe depression or anxiety that may result in harm to themselves, to others or by others.

Information

The guidance counsellor collects and makes available to students up-to-date information of a personal, social, educational and vocational nature such as the rights and responsibilities of an adolescent, substance abuse, sexual health etc.

Special Programs & Services

The guidance counsellor may also oversee special programs and services which are determined by the needs of the school such as peer tutoring, drug awareness, career development and job search etc.
