Operation Mincemeat is a musical comedy with a completely unexpected premise
From the moment I heard that David and Hannah Mirvish were bringing the Tony and Olivier Award-winning Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical to Toronto’s historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, I was determined to see it. I felt very fortunate to be in the audience for the Toronto premiere!
Clever and eccentric, Operation Mincemeat is truly something else, a musical comedy with a completely unexpected premise. It is 1943, and the Allied Forces are desperate to gain the upper hand in the Second World War. Their next move is critical: they must invade Sicily as part of the campaign to liberate Europe, but first they need to convince Adolf Hitler and his army that the Allies intend to strike somewhere else. Their solution? Rather than rely on conventional espionage, the British devise a plan involving a dead body, forged documents and an elaborate deception designed to fool the Nazis. The corpse is to be dressed as a British military officer, supplied with supposedly confidential papers and allowed to wash ashore in Spain, where German intelligence agents are expected to discover the material.
The craziest part? This is a true story. The musical manages to balance respect for the historical significance and the lives lost during the war while embracing the unbelievable details and hilarity of this particular mission.
Throughout the performance, I found myself incredibly impressed by the exceptional cast of performers on stage – Mariah Copeland, Katie Kleiger, Luke Antony Neville, Erin Ramirez, and Jake Bentley Young. A cast of only five, each actor takes on multiple roles throughout the production, all playing both male and female characters convincingly. Although all fantastic performers in their own rites, stealing the show for me was Luke Antony Neville, who primarily plays the role of Hester Leggatt, a senior secretary at MI5. He takes on the one truly emotional and poignant moment in the show, singing “Dear Bill” as Hester crafts a love letter to be included in their fake British officer’s briefcase. The silence in the audience after his performance was through spoke volumes.
The creative force behind this production is SpitLip, the writing and performing collective comprising David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts. The musical began performances in 2019 at London's 77-seat New Diorama Theatre. Audiences and critics quickly recognized that something special was happening, prompting a rapid upscaling to bigger stages. The West End production opened at the Fortune Theatre on March 29, 2023, winning Best New Musical at the 2024 Olivier Awards before opening on Broadway on February 15, 2025. Its Broadway journey yielded four Tony Award nominations in 2025, including Best Musical. Jak Malone won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Hester Leggatt, having previously won the Olivier Award in the same category.
Now, Toronto audiences have the opportunity to discover what the excitement is all about! It is always such a treat when Mirvish Productions manages to bring fresh and exciting musicals to a Canadian audience.
